He was hurt. She wasn’t going to tell him a thing. She didn’t trust him, and that stung the most. He had let her lead the way, he was there for her in the ways he knew how, and it still wasn’t enough.
He felt the rejection course through this veins. “Can you at least tell me what’s going on? Why do you have to leave so soon?”
She shook her head and just kept walking.
“You’re throwing away a great thing. We are great together. We could make this work!” he felt himself getting panicked as she continued to walk up the stairs. He felt the need to chase her, to convince her that he could be a part of her life.
Her foot fell on the first step, and then the second without looking back.
Fine. If that’s what she wanted, then that’s what he’d give her.
He let her continue up the stairs, and then he turned, determined to make himself sweat this time. Maybe he needed a little release himself.
After hammering at the speed ball for nearly a minute, he got a call from Boss, yet again. This was getting old. Never before had Boss called him so often.
Maybe he had information? He answered.
“Tucker. You were right. She has no criminal charges anywhere. In fact, the only time her name comes across any police reports is when a Reginald Anderson is in the picture. He has assault charges pending against him for kidnapping and violently beating a woman, most likely Ann. He has charges pressed him in three different states for breaking a restraining order, the last one was nearly two years ago, but all the charges were pressed by Anna Marie. I think you’re right. I think she’s the one being threatened, not you.”
